Jesus often found himself in heated exchanges with the Pharisees over their religious hypocrisy and self-righteousness. Jesus challenges them about the state of their hearts, and the reason for his stinging verbal rebuke is obvious. The Pharisees had allowed themselves to become filled with religious hypocrisy that kept those they were leading from experiencing the true liberty of knowing and serving God.
